As most of you know, Alex Meyer is a pitcher in the Minnesota Twins baseball organization. The Greensburg High School graduate is pitching on their AAA team. I understand that he would have been brought up to the major league team a couple weeks ago, but there is a clause in his contract that would have required the Twins to pay him a bonus. For that reason, he will probably have to stay at the minor league level until sometime in June or July. What you might not have known is that Alex and Brian Hoeing of Batesville are cousins. There are a lot of similarities between these two pitchers. Both are very tall and throw very hard. Alex is left handed and Brian is right handed. Alex played his collegiate ball at Kentucky and Brian plans to play his collegiate ball at Louisville. In the olden days when a player was ready for the majors they brought him up. Now you have to check with the contract to see what clauses they might have written into it. You can bet that the team owner will win unless a player is confident enough that he takes the matter to court. These clauses are put in contracts to control players’ careers, and the player usually has no options but to go along with them if he ever wants to see the major leagues.
