Tedeschi Trucks Band Delivers Standout Show For Night One Of Red Rocks Run [Videos]

first_imgLast night, Tedeschi Trucks Band played their first of two nights at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the final shows of their 2018 Wheels of Soul tour that’s been going strong since June. The Marcus King Band and Drive-By Truckers have been assisting with the opening duties all tour, and both bands put on smoking performances at the famed outdoor amphitheater last night.Unlike typical Red Rocks shows, the venue was packed before the opener came on, with fans anxious to see the blues scene’s favorite husband and wife duo destroy one of the country’s most beloved outdoor venues. Tedeschi Trucks Band opened with a cover of Derek and the Dominos‘ “Tell The Truth”, allowing Derek Trucks to put on a masters-class on slide-guitar, right out of the gates. TTB’s sweet vocals and harmonies shined during the opener, giving way to the powerful Susan Tedeschi led “Do I Look Worried”. With the horns blasting, Derek and Susan worked through the tune with a massive solo, scorching the fired-up crowd.Following great takes of “Don’t Know What It Means” and “Shame”, Tedeschi Trucks hopped into “Sweet and Low”, a tune they busted out Thursday night, for the first time in five years. The band had such a good time with “Sweet and Low” earlier in the week, that it seems promising that the once-shelved tune may be a regular in the TTB live catalog now. Mike Mattison laid down some badass vocal work on “Going Down Slow”, another example of one of the band’s secret weapons. Tedeschi laid down a nice solo, before Mark Rivers and Alecia Chakour joined back in with Mattison on vocals, bringing “Going Down Slow” to a powerful finale.A ripping “Don’t Let Me Slide” moved into a stripped down and extra-bluesy “How Blue Can You Get?”, the Johnny Moores’ Three Blazers cut that has become a staple in the TTB catalog. Tedeschi and Trucks compliment each other so perfectly, with Derek’s raw and gritty blues guitar blending in with Susan’s mind-bending vocal work, as the sold-out Red Rocks crowd applauded for more. Tedeschi again got a chance to show off her guitar skills, before bringing the music down, and screaming out the chorus in a call-and-response manner with the engaged crowd. Mattison and Rivers stepped up to lead the band through “More and More”, getting things heated up, as Kebbi Williams, Elizabeth Lea and Ephraim Owens, belted it out on the horns.Following, “Idle Wind”, the twelve-piece ensemble welcomed out Drive-By Truckers’ Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley to join the fray for Bob Dylan‘s “Going, Going, Gone”, as has become the custom on the 2018 Wheels of Soul excursion. The horn-heavy intro to “Let’s Go Get Stoned” rang out next, with Tedeschi, Chakour and Mattison passing vocals around throughout The Coasters cover, also welcoming out DBT keyboardist Jay Gonzalez. Tedeschi Trucks Band’s horn section and powerful vocals mesh together in ways that are sometimes hard to believe, going through the chorus of “Let’s Go Get Stoned” one last time, before bringing the massive one-set showcase to an end. After a brief second to catch their breaths, Tedeschi Trucks Band came back out for a massive encore, including a creative Sly and the Family Stones medley, leaving the packed-to-the-brim Red Rocks crowd jaw-dropped and in awe. “High and Mighty” started it off, with Jay Gonzalez as special guest, giving Tedeschi one last chance to serenade the crowd with her sweet and smooth vocals. Mashing up Sly and the Family Stone’s “Sing A Simple Song” and “I Want To Take You Higher”, the rockstar couple and their ten bandmates welcomed out Marcus King and the horn section of his band to help dazzle Red Rocks with their magical musical intuition, bringing the marathon of an evening to a memorable close.Check out the fan-shot videos below.“Do I Look Worried”[Video: Jeremiah Rodgers]“I Want To Take You Higher”[Video: Jeremiah Rodgers]Tedeschi Trucks Band returns to Red Rocks tonight for the final show of their 2018 Wheels of Soul tour.
