  • DD Motoring: The Block is on the boat

first_imgKen Block is on his way to Donegal. Well, his car is on the boat on the high seas sailing ahead of him as you read this. That’s the latest word on the grapevine from across the pond this week as he continues on his world tour which includes the Donegal International Rally in less than a months time in June. Advertisement Speaking from the other side of the world earlier this month in New Zealand the 51-year-old world famous American driver said he is looking forward to getting to Ireland and getting some testing done before “the Donegal” (or Donegal as the California-born driver ace pronounced it).Who is this guy?Block is a professional driver with the Hoonigan Racing Team which was also known as The Monster World Team before that.Block made his money as a shoemaker, a co-founder of DC Shoes. Over the years, he has also competed in many action sports events including Motorcross and even skateboarding and snowboarding. Advertisement Since selling his ownership of DC Shoes, Block has shifted his business focus to Hooingan Division which is a brand for auto enthusiasts.Ken Block excited about his new car and looking forward to Donegal for the rally in June.He is currently the co-owner and describes himself as the Head Hoonigan in the company.Blocks entrance into Rallying came in a Subaru WRX STi in 2005 which developed into The Monster World Team and was one of first to take part in the first X Games.90’s iconBlock has taken a 90’s icon, the rally proven world rally car Ford Escort RS Cosworth 4×4 and has taken it to the maximum possible within modified regulations to produce an animal of a very wide track rally car that Block will hopefully keep between the ditches in Donegal. A view of how wide Ken Blocks car will stand on the road when it comes to competing in the Donegal International Rally later in June. The car was build in England by MDV Motorsport. This is the second generation Cosworth Escort that the company have developed and produced for Ken Block.Steering problemsIn the recent rally in New Zealand, the Cosworth developed a problem with is power steering that could not be rectified on the event leaving Block disappointed at not getting seat time behind the wheel of his new car.Block spent the week before the event testing and completing a full recce of the event only to let a very simple part of workings of the car let them down. Ken Blocks Escort Cosworth at the MDV development workshop in England.Describing the steering as a very new piece of technology it wasn’t possible for the team to make the necessary repairs at the event. As we go to print this week the Cosworth is on route to Donegal which more than likely will include a trip to MDV before had to sort the steering before Donegal. One roadblock to anotherLetterkenny is no stranger to roadblocks recently with the congestion caused by the much-needed upgrade to the sewer and water system in the Letterkenny. But even if roadworks disappear for the weekend of the rally, a road “BLOCK” of a difference will arrive in Donegal when our Ken makes his way off the starting ramp on the Friday of the rally all things going to plan.On board with Ken Block in his Cossie 2 as he put the car through testing for Donegal Rally in June. The Hoonigan Division has a following in the millions, 39 million was the kind of numbers that viewed the gymkhanas online. That’s the kind of numbers that will be logged in to see Block in the Hills of Donegal in June as he pushes his Escort to the limit for the weekend.Escort Cosworth 4X4 previous success in Donegal. The Donegal was won in 93′ by Stephen Finlay in the similar original group. A rally car and local driver, James Cullen, won the Cork 20 International in a more standard group version of the Ford Escort RS Cosworth. This Escort, dubbed Block the Cossie V2, will be Ken Block’s weapon of choice for stage rallying in 2019.Ken Block watches his dream car come to a reality for his 2019 World Tour.He says the goal of this design was to apply a modern WRC-style aero package to the body.Complete with 4.3-inch widened boxed fenders, some extreme wings, and an aggressive diffuser, it’s a great take on what a factory-backed Escort Cosworth rally car in the year 2019 would look like. The engine is a Ford YB unit built by Julian Godfrey pushing out 371 horsepower, getting thrust to all four wheels via a six-speed Sadev sequential gearbox. The Hoonigan driver announced a worldwide tour consisting of some of the coolest rally events going on this year. Some of the events include the 100 Acre Wood Rally in Missouri, Rally Whangarei in New Zealand, the Donegal Rally in Ireland, the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Gymkhana Grid in Poland, and Rally Legends in San Marino.HighspeedThe superhighway that is social media will be popping on the run-up to the rally this year with a household name like Block competing in Donegal.Ken Block in his Ford Escort Cosworth 4X4 as he tests the car for his forthcoming World Tour which included the Donegal Rally.Hoonigan in the Hills will be beamed out to all corners of the world which can be bad for our small county stuck up in the North-West corner of Europe.Happy Motoring FolksDD Motoring: The Block is on the boat was last modified: May 22nd, 2019 by Brian McDaidShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

  • Major Russian banks attacked by powerful IoT devices-focused botnet

first_imgThe Rise and Rise of Mobile Payment Technology Tags:#botnet#cyberattack#data#IoT#Kaspersky Labs#Russia#security David Curry Five major Russian banks were targeted late last week by a botnet comprised of 24,000 computer and IoT devices. The attacks came from devices in 30 countries, including the United States, India, and Taiwan. The attacks came in the form of distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS), which sends millions of requests to servers, taking them offline. From there, hackers may be able to compromise systems and steal information, but the five banks have denied any customer information has been stolen.See Also: India inks tech-leveraging smart city pact with RussiaSberbank, Alfa Bank, the Bank of Moscow, Rosbank, and the Moscow Exchange were all targeted in the attack, and websites were forced offline for several hours. The attack started on November 8, and it took two days for systems to normalize.Kaspersky Lab, a Russian security firm, said that at its peak the botnet was sending 660,000 requests per second. The attack is similar to the one that took Netflix, Twitter, and Pinterest offline, utilizing IoT devices, but was not at the same scale.“These are complex attacks that are virtually impossible to stop with standard tools available to communications providers,” said Kaspersky Lab to Tass, a Russian state news agency.Kaspersky calls this “calm before the storm”Kaspersky has also warned that this could be the calm before the storm, hinting that a larger attack may be coming in the next week. Whoever controls the botnet may be scouting to see how fast the banks react to DDoS attacks.Botnets are starting to become a major problem for the web, as more devices come online with poor security credentials. The surge in IoT devices has provided hackers with oodles of connected devices that can be compromised easily. The U.S. government issued warnings to the makers of these unsecure devices and the Department of Homeland Security plans to publish guidelines for how to encrypt and secure devices. We have yet to see how Russia will make sure its own systems and devices are safe from botnets. • Will Android 2.0 revolutionize the healthcare wearable industry?

first_imgWhen we talk about the wearables and healthcare industry together, a round of feelings begins to move like any picture frame. While on one side the benefits they offer, on another the level of dependency which can be seen these days.If you are the one planning to/have come with a healthcare wearable, you might be having the fear of it being rejected by FDA, or whether if the people will accept it. This is something general, especially after finding FDA rejecting Jawbone’s and Apple’s wearables. However, you might find it making space in the hearts of the general public, assisting them in general awareness (also shared by FDA).See also: Four big trends pointing towards a boom in healthcare IoTSomewhere in 2014 wearable devices had just 2,500 applications including health & fitness apps. But it is expected that by 2019 this will touch the mark of 349,000 third-party applications. The figure clearly narrates the future of health & fitness apps. If we talk about healthcare apps in particular, according to a survey report issued in 2016 FitBit rules the segment by covering 57% of the entire healthcare wearable mobility solutions. But despite all these statistics and people’s mass acceptance globally, getting approval by FDA is still a difficult task for many. Will Android Wear 2.0 be a game changer?Jawbone isn’t the only one facing the tough time with FDA’s tough guidelines. The strictness recently shoved Apple as well. With such big names facing a tough time in having the FDA’s approval, how can we expect others to get things done?Maybe to bridge the gap, Google decided to release Android Wear 2.0. The software is currently available in developer preview and is scheduled to be released on Feb 9, 2017, as shared by Evan Blass.Expectations now flowingWith the very first knock of the news, people globally began expecting new innovations in the world of healthcare wearables. Well, to explore the exact scenario, we decided to have a look at the feature that the google will be unwrapping with this release. As per the words shared, Google takes a massive step by including ‘Health’ feature. This new inclusion will make the Android wearables stand proudly and compete with rival devices like Withings Activite. The feature will activate as soon as the user begins to walk, run, or cycle. With the very news, mobile app developers have started to making plans to develop an application for same. However, there are speculations that Android wear will be coming with a relevant tracking app. Apart from the above-mentioned special integration, here are few more features for Android 2.0:Complications: Another major integration in this new version. Though for the Apple Watch 2 users it was already available but the Android lovers will be getting this new treat soon. While the former will allow the user to navigate between the app views, the later will serve an easy access to some common actions that you perform within an application. Standalone apps: Google is finally coming with this feature, which will allow the wearable apps to work independently of phone apps. So now, there won’t be any need of keeping your Android smartphone close always. Notifications: Till date the notifications used to cover the entire screen. Though this might have been delivering ease to many users, but for this new version, Google will be introducing notifications in form of small screens. Upon tapping these notifications can be enlarged, allowing the user to go through them easily. Related Posts Shahid Mansuri Input: The new feature brings three changes with it. The list of changes includes a swiping enabled small keyboard. This is like Android Proper, which will provide you better typing experience. The second in the list is Smart replies, that will assist you by suggesting three probable replies to a message. The last one here is for the developers solely. This change will allow them to create their own third-party keyboards for use.The bottom lineWearables no doubt are the future of technology. Their bond with the healthcare industry and the efforts made till date are unmatched. But if in particular, we talk about the changes or rather use the term ‘revolution’ for the changes to come with Android 2.0, we might be over expecting. There are indeed some great features, but still, the scope is wide. Apart from this, the limited compatibility of this new version (includes few devices from Asus, Casio, Fossil, LG, Motorola, Nixon, Sony, Polar, Michael Kors, and Huawei) points at little more patience for the brightest dawn of the healthcare wearable industry. • Video: Cam Newton Is Getting Crushed For Sulking, Walking Out Of Press Conference

first_imgCam Newton is unhappy during press conference.Cam NewtonThe people who don’t like Cam Newton have more fuel to add to that hate fire. The Carolina Panthers’ quarterback is currently getting crushed on social media for the way he handled himself after his team’s loss to the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl. At his post-game press conference, Newton sullenly sat for roughly three minutes, barely answered any questions and then got up and left. Here’s video of his exit. Panthers Cam Newton barely answered questions and here he exits pic.twitter.com/eNMDpv2sQH— Cam Inman (@CamInman) February 8, 2016And here’s some of the reaction. Cam’s presser was weak. Tonight’s outcome doesn’t change how incredible he is, was this season. But how he handled the presser was most disappointing— Chris Fedor (@ChrisFedor) February 8, 2016BTW…I love Cam…great player, but wish he would’ve handled that press session better than that— Joel Klatt (@joelklatt) February 8, 2016It’s fair to call Cam a front runner now. I’m not a Cam hater, but he has to be a better leader & professional. https://t.co/emFpcziUjW— Jerry Brewer (@JerryBrewer) February 8, 2016Just when I start liking Cam, he goes back to pouting and a walk off at the press conference. Stardom is a two way street.— Hunter Mahan (@HunterMahan) February 8, 2016Hardest thing to do after a “big game” loss is speak to the media (yes I know I had to a lot) but what was that Cam Newton?! #MVP #SB50— Taylor Twellman (@TaylorTwellman) February 8, 2016I see college freshmen and sophomores handle themselves better annually after losing in the Final Four than Cam Newton just did. Ooooof.— Matt Norlander (@MattNorlander) February 8, 2016Obviously, it’s understandable that Newton is disappointed, but the criticism of him is (mostly) fair here. He could’ve acted better.last_img read more

  • Paris MoU Moves Palau and Vanuatu to the Black List

first_imgzoom The Paris MoU Committee has adopted new performance lists for flags, moving Palau and Vanuatu to the Black List from the Grey List.Additionally, the Republic of Korea, which last year was on the White List, was moved to the Grey List, while Saint Vincent and the Grenadines moved from the Black List to the Grey List. The new performance lists, which were adopted following the approval of the 2016 inspection results at Paris MoU’s 50th meeting in May, will take effect from July 1, 2017.A total number of 73 flags are listed on the White, Grey and Black (WGB) List for 2016, 42 of those are on the White List, 19 on the Grey List and 12 on the Black List. The WGB List is based on the total number of inspections and detentions over a 3-year rolling period for flags with at least 30 inspections in the period.Furthermore, the Committee has been closely monitoring the performance of classification societies acting as Recognised Organisations, ROs, for flags. A minimum number of 60 inspections per RO is needed before the performance is taken into account for the list. In 2016 there are 33 ROs recorded on the performance list.Compared with last year’s performance level, this year none of the ROs have been placed in the very low performing part of the list. Four ROs have been placed in the low performing part, against 1 last year, and 19 ROs have been placed in the medium part of the list, compared to 22 last year.last_img read more

  • Gareon Conley confident in young secondary Malik Hooker

OSU redshirt sophomore safety Malik Hooker (24) carries the ball after an interception during the spring game on April 16 at Ohio Stadium. Credit: Lantern file photoLast season was a standout year for the Ohio State secondary. The Buckeyes excelled in 2015 with the likes of now NFL players Vonn Bell and Eli Apple. Redshirt junior cornerback Gareon Conley is now the veteran member of the unit—and only returning starter—with fans eager to see how he and the rest of the defensive backs will respond to the immense pressure of living up to expectations. Conley had a solid 2015 campaign where he recorded two interceptions and 49 tackles and earned high praise from the OSU coaching staff. During his freshman campaign, he also found his way into a role with the special teams, and he contributed as a reserve cornerback. Coach Urban Meyer believes Conley is the next cornerback in a lineage of NFL-ready players“Gareon is playing, man, he’s playing at a high, high level right now,” Meyer said. “He’s an NFL corner someday.”With Conley the go-to guy, the secondary for the Scarlet and Gray has a scarcity of snaps played under their belts. The young players will turn to the now No. 1 defensive back for guidance, and Conley feels ready for the challenge. “It’s going to be a great challenge because I got a lot of guys who I’ve gotta bring up,” Conley said. “I just gotta help the guys right now learn the game.”Even though the task is tall, Conley feels the unit will respond to the pressure with poise, and there should be no drop off from last year’s secondary. “They all play at a high level already,” Conley said. “It’s just getting that experience right now so we can be ready for that first game.”One of the top candidates for the secondary for OSU, redshirt sophomore Marshon Lattimore, is coming off a season-ending hamstring injury. The injury ultimately led to a redshirt season for the Cleveland native, but his teammates expect he won’t be affected in 2016. “When he’s out there, he’s going full speed,” Conley said. “He looks real good. You can’t even tell when he’s out there.”Of all the candidates to start as a defensive back for the Scarlet and Gray, Conley said redshirt sophomore Malik Hooker has been one of the top performers of the summer so far. Hooker played in all 13 games last season, where he earned 10 total tackles on the year. He was listed as the No. 1 safety in the spring and has been named as a possible replacement for Vonn Bell and Tyvis Powell.“(Hooker), that’s my best friend,” Conley said. “He’s always been a great athlete. I say he’s one of the best on the team. His game right now, he’s playing at a high level. Off the charts.”The former New Castle, Pennsylvania, standout wide receiver and cornerback knows he has plenty of expectations by coaches and players. However, Hooker said he feels the backing of Conley is a testament to the effort he has put forth during the offseason, and his teammate’s confidence will keep him putting forth as much effort as possible. “For (Conley) to be a major key in the defense this year and last year, to say something like that just motivates me to work even harder and be the best I can be for the defense,” Hooker said. While starters have yet to be named for most of the team, Hooker appears to have an edge with two weeks before the season starts. Only time will tell if OSU enjoys another year of dominance in the secondary. read more
