They are eight points off fourth-placed Chelsea in the Premier League. They lost Lucas Torreira to injury in the first half, the midfielder taken off on a stretcher after a tough but fair sliding tackle by James Bolton. That was their only negative from the game at Fratton Park though. Bukayo Saka – one of the two to keep their place from Thursday’s defeat – forced a save and Gabriel Martinelli headed over the bar. Sokratis opened the scoring with a wonderful volley from Nelson’s right-wing cross. And Nketiah scored his third goal since returning from a loan spell at Leeds when he controlled another Nelson cross before rifling into the roof of the net from close range. From that point on Arsenal looked comfortable – and extend their unbeaten run against Portsmouth to 22 games. They have not lost to Pompey since 1958. FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail分享 Loading… Eddie Nketiah bundled home from close range to wrap up the victory six minutes after the restart. Pompey’s only shot on target came in the second half, with substitute Ronan Curtis’ effort saved. The other fifth-round ties are on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The quarter-final draw is on BBC One on Wednesday at 21:50 GMT after Sheffield Wednesday v Manchester City. Arsenal came into this game on the back of their shock Europa League exit to Olympiakos on Thursday. Arsenal scored either side of half-time to beat League One side Portsmouth 2-0 and reach the FA Cup quarter-finals on Monday night. Pompey played well in the first half at Fratton Park but trailed to Sokratis Papastathopoulos’ volley from Reiss Nelson’s cross just before the break.last_img read more

  • LA Dodgers hurt by long ball again, lose to Blue Jays

first_imgIt was left for the two bullpens to decide it – and the Dodgers’ bullpen nearly did in the bottom of the seventh. After Louis Coleman retired the first two batters, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts went to Adam Liberatore to face a left-handed stretch of the Blue Jays’ lineup. A hit batsman, a single, a wild pitch and a walk later and Liberatore had loaded the bases. Joe Blanton got reigning AL MVP Josh Donaldson to pop out, defusing that situation. He couldn’t survive another one. With one out in the bottom of the eighth inning, Edwin Encarnacion doubled off Blanton. The Dodgers intentionally walked the left-handed Justin Smoak to bring up the right-handed Pillar. He jumped on a 1-and-2 fastball from Blanton and drove it over the fence in left field. It was the eighth home run given up by Dodgers’ pitching in the first three games of this interleague road trip. The Dodgers are now 3-10 in their past 13 games in American League ballparks. Justin Turner had a two-out single in the first inning off Stroman and the Dodgers didn’t even get another ball out of the infield until another two-out single by Turner in the sixth inning. They had two other singles in between, both on the infield, while striking out seven times.Maeda, meanwhile, was picking his way through the Blue Jays’ powerful lineup, walking a season-high four batters but allowing just one hit – and even that one resulted in an out. Former Dodgers infielder Darwin Barney shot a liner into the right field corner, leading off the third inning, and tried to stretch it for a double. But Yasiel Puig’s perfect throw to the second-base bag beat Barney. That was Barney’s mistake. Maeda made his only mistake in the sixth inning. After walking Josh Donaldson with one out, Maeda fell behind in the count to Jose Bautista then hung a full-count slider. Bautista did what he does to hanging sliders with regularity and gave the Blue Jays a two-run lead. The Dodgers came to life and matched it in the top of the seventh, stringing together doubles by Joc Pederson and Carl Crawford and an RBI single by Chase Utley – all with two outs. TORONTO >> A pitchers’ duel between starters Kenta Maeda and Marcus Stroman was decided by the bullpens.Penalty kicks might have been better for the Dodgers.A three-run home run by Kevin Pillar in the eighth inning off Dodgers reliever Joe Blanton gave the Toronto Blue Jays a 5-2 victory in the opener of the interleague series at Rogers Centre on Friday night.Stroman and Maeda matched zeroes into the sixth inning.center_img Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Errorlast_img read more

  • The 2nd edition of Indian GP holds many thrills, with sizzling battle between Alonso and Vettel

first_imgI read in the papers earlier this week that the American coffee giant Starbucks opened its much-awaited outlet in South Mumbai.Known as the “SoBo crowd” and not famous for their patience, they waited in long queues quite simply for coffee. But it wasn’t just for coffee, was it? It was for the bragging rights of the “I was there” moment. We’ve seen this happen before- the first multiplex, the first pizza joint, the first international rock concert- every time a new event or property gets introduced, there is an energy- part-euphoria part-curiosity- which sweeps through us all.And then soon enough it becomes a part of us and we just “get used to it”. But Formula One is such a rare exciting mix of sport, adrenaline and glamour that there is no option but to be mesmerised by it.There is no denying that with television coverage getting better, with high definition and what not, the sports fan could hardly choose a better vantage point than the comfort of his couch.Yet, there is a deeper significance to being at a sporting event- in the flesh, craning your neck, standing on your toes to catch a glimpse of your favourite stars in action.Stories about little kids going to watch Test matches with their parents and, in that instant, making a life-altering career decision are well known. Ask Rahul Dravid or Steve Waugh.Formula One has come to India for only the second time. To look at it differently, including the second edition, F1 would only have spent six days in India! The significance of hosting an F1 weekend and the footprint it leaves behind runs much deeper, though.advertisementThe second edition of the Indian GP holds many thrills. Right at the top is that sizzling battle for the drivers’ championship between Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel. There’s an ever-improving Force India car that seems determined to get on the podium in front of a grandstand painted in the same colours that it sports on itself.Michael Schumacher will race in an F1 car in India for the last time, giving us a chance to say ‘Thank you’ and ‘Well done’ to a man who single-handedly brought in Indian fans by the million to motorsports.Of course, there is one of our own in there too and Narain will look to push as hard as he can and make the best of what is available to impress the country.A bit away from the spotlight and the flashbulbs, the next generation of Indian racing drivers in their smaller cars are giving it everything to fast-track themselves on the long journey to F1.There is a seriously strong pool of young Indian drivers competing in the JK Asia Racing Championship, and it is from support races such as these that we will find continuity in our efforts to produce racing drivers.Personally, as a racing driver at the cusp of F1, being at the Buddh International Circuit during the weekend is hugely significant.Last year at this time, I was far away from the action, testing at Indianapolis as I became the first Indian driver in Indy racing. This year, being in the middle of the noise and the frenzy feels just right.Which is why, as comfortable as your couch maybe, and as long as the trek to the Buddh circuit is- make sure that if you can make it, you do it. Bring the kids with you; kids, drag your folks along, because all it takes is that one moment to fall in love with a sport.last_img read more

first_imgLAS VEGAS — The NHL for the first time has tested real-time puck and player tracking in regular-season games and intends to have it in place across the league next season.Microchips were added to players’ shoulder pads and fitted inside specially designed pucks for two Vegas Golden Knights home games this week, against the New York Rangers and the San Jose Sharks. Antennas around the arena tracked the players and the puck through radio frequencies and relayed the data to a suite where league and Players’ Association executives and representatives from 20 teams and various technology firms, sports betting companies and TV rights holders were watching.Previous versions of puck and player tracking were tested at All-Star games and the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. • Unnerved by personal attacks, Tiwari firm on putting up tough fight against opponents

first_imgNew Delhi: Even after AAP’s North East Delhi candidate Dilip Pandey sought votes for himself and asked people not to vote for a “singer-dancer” like Manoj Tiwari, the Delhi BJP chief seems unnerved by such personal attacks on his art and hard work. With just two days to go for the polls in Delhi, the saffron party has concluded that it remains unbothered by the alliance storm that both the Congress and AAP had kicked up. Irrespective of who was responsible for the alliance’s fall, the BJP has resolved to put up a tough fight against both its major opposition parties. Also Read – Odd-Even: CM seeks transport dept’s views on exemption to women, two wheelers, CNG vehiclesResponding to allegations from the AAP camp, Tiwari had said that while Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his entourage had intended the “singer-dancer” remark as an insult, the sizeable Poorvanchali population in North East Delhi has not responded accordingly. With a large part of the voting population in Tiwari’s constituency being Poorvanchali, they seem to have taken it as a challenge to elect him and prove AAP wrong. It seems that Tiwari is proving too tough for his opponents in the Poorvanchali-heavy constituency. Also Read – More good air days in Delhi due to Centre’s steps: JavadekarAccording to age-old poet Tulsidas, people of a group tend to be charged-up when their own are insulted, and this will come true in all likelihood when the Capital goes to polls on May 12. The fact that former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit contesting against Tiwari will also not be able to sway voters in the area. This is purely because Tiwari has connected with Poorvanchali people on an emotional level that no other candidate could possibly achieve. Moreover, popular Haryanvi singer-dancer Sapna Chaudhary campaigning for Tiwari in NE Delhi has lent her support for the saffron party in large numbers. And the combined campaign efforts from both Tiwari and Chaudhary have turned AAP’s belittling attack into something Poorvanchalis can be proud of. Taking inspiration from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tiwari has made sure AAP’s insults reach all of the Poorvanchali population in Delhi, which has resulted in massive support from the community for the Delhi BJP chief. And this is exemplified by Tiwari’s comment, saying that people of Delhi will teach Congress and AAP a lesson when the results come out on May 23. Further, it seems very clear that while both Congress and AAP are busy blaming each other, the electorate in Delhi will focus on voting for a party that can get work done, especially ones relating to outstanding development.last_img read more
